Where to Find Free Chemo Hat Knitting Patterns
Recently, I found out a good friend and neighbor has breast cancer. In this situation, there isn’t much I can do except be supportive and offer to help if I can. Since she was soon having chemotherapy, I decided to knit her a chemo hat or two to cheer her up. Here are some of the wonderful patterns you can find free on the Internet for knitting chemo hat. Even if you don’t personally know someone going through chemo, these hats make great donations to your local cancer society.
One thing to keep in mind as far as yarn selection for a chemo hat is that it will be resting directly against the scalp so the softer the yarn, the better. Make sure your stitches produce a solid hat too. You don’t want a loose, stretchy stitch which might show the bald spots underneath.

Here’s a kind of wild and funky chemo hat pattern from Rita Gaudiello. She uses eyelash yarn for a hair like effect that is really cute. Rita says she has knitted 50 of these chemo hats for the Johns Hopkins Cancer Center. This pattern looks pretty easy and uses size 13 circular needles which are 16 inches in length.
The “I Care” chemo hat knitting pattern, using Bunny Soft yarn, is soft and fuzzy and would be very nice for winter time.
Kis Knit offers this cute chemo hat pattern with a rolled brim. The author uses Berroco Plush yarn.
KnitPicks’ chemo hat pattern is a little different in that it allows for a scarf to be worn underneath. It’s made from Swish Worsted Merino Superwash yarn. The hat pattern is a free download but you can also purchase the yarn pictured at the KnitPick’s site if you would like to.
Dawn’s Dream Designs’ chemo hat knitting pattern uses one skein of Berroco Chincilla yarn which is really colorful and soft. I also loved Dawn’s Frills on the Side scarf pattern!
Looking for a chemo hat with ruffles? Plymouth Yarn’s Love You Mama knitting pattern uses Plymouth yarn called Oh My! and has a cute ruffled brim.
The Head Hugger’s website has a full page of hat patterns suitable for chemotherapy patients. Various sizes fit men, women and children. There are also some crochet patterns for chemo hats here, as well as a page of great embellishment ideas like knitted and crocheted flowers. Great idea to make your hat pattern really unique.
If you like the knifty knitter, Bev’s Cottage offers this slumber chemo hat pattern for the circular loom. Bev also has a whole page of knitting and crochet patterns you could
use as chemo hats. The hat in the photo comes from her blog.
If you know someone going through chemotherapy, one of these knitted chemo hats will be sure to cheer them up and show them you care.
