Slouch Hat Knitting Pattern – Where to Find Free Slouch Hat Patterns
Are you looking for a free slouch hat knitting pattern? You’ve come to the right place. Before Christmas, I did a blog entry on the slouch hat knitting pattern I was using to
make my daughter a gift. In doing a search for slouchy hat patterns, I found how popular they are – but how hard it is to find just the right pattern. The one I used ispictured on the right, with a link to the artist’s website on Etsy. I did find some terrific free slouch hat knitting patterns, though, so I’ve provided links to them here.
One side note – I tried to find a slouch hat pattern for the knifty knitter, but I’m not sure you can make that type of hat on the circular loom. Since the edge of the knitted circle rolls, you’d have to crochet some sort of edging to flatten it. I plan to give this a try though, so stay tuned to see if that worked out and I’ll give you the pattern I come up with. This book, Loom Knitting Primer, with basics on using the circular loom, has some promising knitted hat patterns that you could turn into a slouchy hat.
I checked out just about every Internet resource for slouch hat knitting patterns and most didn’t look like the style made popular in the movie, Twilight. The only one I found like the movie is the one I purchased from Etsy.
Here are some of the links I did find for free slouch hat patterns for knitting:
Slouch hat knitting pattern by Jimmy Beans Wools – This looks like a good one!
Slouch Hat Pattern by PresentKnits@Blogspot. This slouch hat is multi-colored and doesn’t have the crocheted edging.
Slouchy ShortRow by Brittany Wilson
Oversized Beret by Lion Brand – Site requires registration, which is free. If there are any Young and the Restless fans out there, this is the style of beret Lilly is wearing because she lost her hair to chemotherapy.
Barrymore Slouch Hat on Knitting Daily. Knitting Daily also requires a free registration with the site.
I think the “how to knit slouch hat secrets,” if there are any, are these:
- knit more rows so it’s long enough to “droop” in the back.
- decrease the last 10 rows or so, rather than weaving yarn through the ends and tying into a small circle
- add a few rows of crochet to the front of the hat so it lays nicely on the head, or else you could use smaller knitting needles for the first 6 rows and then switch to a larger size.
The Slouch hat pattern that I used, pictured above added crocheted edging to the hat and used decreasing. It was very simple and quick to do. After checking out all the free slouch hat knit patterns available this one by Simon Designs, is still my favorite. It and can be purchased on Etsy.com for five dollars. Well worth the price!
If you don’t mind paying $5 for a pattern, these by PixieBell on Etsy also look like winners!
I searched literally dozens of websites for slouch hat knitting patterns and keep in mind that these were just the ones I really liked, which look fairly close the slouchy hat pictured. One reason for this blog posting is that as time permits, I plan to go back and make one of each of these hats to see how they compare.

Those are some great suggestions for making that hat. And I had never thought about it before now, on what that kind of hat was called.
And thanks so much for visiting our blog.

Hi, I love the Rosalie style hat that is pictured above. I went to the Etsy site and the pattern is no longer available. Any suggestions?

Although when you click on the link for the slouch hat pattern by SimonDesigns on Etsy, it says “sold out” the pattern is still available to purchase. Not sure why it says that.

I want this pattern sooooooooo bad and was up till after midnight trying to get it. There’s no place on that link to purchase pattern. I sent note but still haven’t heard. It’s so frustrating to finally find what you’ve been looking for and then can’t get. Any suggestions.

HI Cathy, Thanks for calling this to my attention. For some reason the link was bringing up the pattern as “sold” and not offering a link to purchase. I went back to her shop and found the pattern there and then there is a “buy now” button. I’ve updated the link but if this happens again, simply go to SimonDesign shop and search for Twilight Slouch hat pattern. It is pictured on her shop’s homepage.
Sorry for your frustration! I’m not sure why that page I linked to showed the pattern was sold and offered no buy link. Hope this helps!
