Scarf Knitting Patterns - Triangle Scarf
If you’re tired of knitting the usual rectangle scarves, you can change it up by knitting triangle scarves. Triangle scarves can also be changed up by using different yarns. You
can go thick and fuzzy for a winter scarf, fuzzy and furry for a fun triangle scarf or use a lighter yarn for a spring and summer triangle scarf to use as a fashion accessory for any time of year. Another thing about triangle scarves is, if you feel like continuing the pattern, you can turn it into a shawl.
The triangle scarf pattern I used is from Stefanie Japel on Ravelry. It cost $2 and was well worth it to me as I learned a new way of increasing by knitting into the front and back of a stitch. Stefanie’s scarf was made of Lion Brand Fun Stripes but I used Sensations Angel Hair yarn because I had 4 skeins of it and wanted to do a slouch hat to match. I used size 13 circular knitting needles.
Stefanie’s triangle scarf pattern can be made with just one skein of yarn. Over 200 Ravelry users have made this pattern and posted photos so you can see many variations.
By the way, if you aren’t a member of Ravelry.com it’s free to join and there is lots of knitting and crochet folks there, as well as lots and lots of patterns. Some are free and some are a few dollars to purchase. I never mind buying a pattern as it helps another artist and I always learn something new with each one.
It’s easy to make a triangle scarf out of any stitch pattern that you like. Here’s a basic lacy triangle scarf pattern:
Use size 13 knitting needles to give a loose lacy stitch. Try it with many different types of yarn. Each will give a different look.
You’ll need some markers to mark the right side of scarf and for placing in the rows to help keep you on pattern.
Cast on 5 stitches.
Row 1: (RS) Knit 2, yo, k1, yo, k 2 – (you have 7 stitches)
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: K2, yo, k1, yo, k1, place a marker, yo, k1, yo, k2–( you now have 11 stitches)
Row 4: Knit.
Row 5: K2, yo, k to marker, yo, sl marker, k1, sl marker, yo, k to last 2 sts, yo, k2 – (You now have 15 stitches)
Row 6: K 2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
Rows 7–8: Repeat Rows 5 and 6 – 19 stitches
Row 9: K 2, *yo, k2tog, rep from * to 1 st before marker, yo, k1, yo, sl marker, k1, sl marker, yo, k 1,
**yo, k2tog, rep from ** to last 2 sts, yo, k 2 – 23 sts.
Row 10: K 2, p to last 2 sts, k 2.
Row 11: Repeat Row 5 – 27 sts.
Row 12: Knit.
Repeat rows 5-12 until the scarf is the desired size for you, then knit the last 4 rows to create an edge. Keep going and you have a triangle shawl.
This pattern was adapted from a triangle shawl pattern at Lion Brand.

Knitting on the Net Lacy Shawl pattern - make it smaller to create a triangle scarf.
Another one from Knitting on the Net. They used fun fur in it but it’s a nice open, lacy pattern.
Ravelry has 7 pages of triangle scarf patterns. Some link to free sources, some charge a couple dollars for the pattern.
