Last weekend I visited a yarn shop near my home for the first time. I like to patronize local yarn shops because I know in the current economy, they sometimes struggle. Plus the local yarn shops usually have a great selection of specialty yarns not found at a Joanns or Michaels. My local yarn shop (I won’t say the name of it because of the topic of this posting) is only about 10 minutes from my home so it would be very convenient to be a regular customer.

About 4 months ago, I took knitting class and the teacher told me she only goes to this shop on Mondays because that is when the owner isn’t there – that she’s pretty rude and abrupt. For this reason, I hadn’t visited before. The day I went, the owner was there and she was very nice and friendly so I wasn’t sure where the knitting instructor got the idea she wasn’t. However, that was before I found the review of the shop on Knitting On the Net. Several people gave the shop a terrible review! They all sited rudeness, the owner being anti-children (even children who knitted and were looking for yarn), overcharging and more.

The yarn selection was beautiful and I ended up spending nearly $100 for yarn for Christmas presents but after reading the reviews, I’m wondering if I’ll ever go back.

I make it a point to go to local yarn shops when we travel and I go to Websters in Ashland, Oregon, when I visit my parents twice a year. I also order yarn from Etsy.com, where you can find hand spun, hand dyed and painted yarn in all colors and styles. So, although I’d like to patronize my own local yarn store, I’m just not sure I should support a store where rudeness is more the norm for treating customers.

What do you think?
