My first felted purse

My first felted purse

My newest knitting project is a felted purse made on a Knifty Knitter. To get ideas, I looked for free felted purse patterns on the internet and at the bottom of this post, I

added links to some of the purses I liked and will be making in the future.

Here is the felted purse pattern I’m using from ProvoCraft as a jumping off point but it’s pretty basic. In their pattern, they used two different yarns to create striping and on my purse I am blending two different yarns all the way through.

To make this felted purse, use the yellow long knifty knitter loom. For the felting yarn, I’m combining Patons Classic Wool in Harvest and Cascade Yarn Tweed in Mocha (Cascade 220). I also purchased a Knifty Knitter Spool Loom, which is my newest toy, to make the purse handle and the handle is all Patons Classic Wool in harvest color.

The more I learn from making projects on Knifty Knitters, the more I love them. Now that I have my spool loom, I’m going to try and come up with some knitting ideas for that as well.

This felted purse didn’t take long to make. You have to remember the size of your purse will shrink after you felt it so make it about twice as long as you’d like the finished purse to be.

In this felted purse pattern, I knitted six rows then took first row of stitches and looped them back over the top of the pegs and knitted these two row together to create a brim to the purse. You can also use this method to create a brim on a hat made on the circular loom.

After knitting the piece as long as you’d like it to be, take the stitches from one side of the loom and loop them over the top of the other side and knit these two together to create the bottom of the purse. After you’ve gotten these two rows knitted together, use a crochet hook to take loops off and crochet the bottom edging.

Hint: Weave in all ends before felting or you’ll get some of the yarn felted into knots!

To felt the purse, wash it in hot water in your washing machine, along with the handle you knitted on the spool loom. To dry my felted bag, I rolled up a bath towel and let the purse dry around it so it would hold a good shape.

Sew the felted handle to the bag and enjoy!

I promised you more free felted purse patterns I found on the net. As I go along, if I find new ones, I’ll post those too so keep checking back.

Just added: I loved this felted bag pattern on Magical Knitting. Here’s more free patterns too that are really cute.

Since it’s snowing in Texas today, I think I may put on an old movie and work on this knitting project.
