When we first moved to Texas, my sister came to visit and when she found some Texas shaped macaroni to cook, she

had to buy some and take home to California. Nobody there ever thought of making macaroni in the shape of that state!  Here in Texas you can find all sorts of Texas shaped products, from stepping stones to cookie cutters to candles.

It’s true that Texas and Texans are very proud of themselves and their state. Being from Oregon myself, I didn’t really care for Texas very much when we lived down south near the coast. I loved the green and the mountains and the wide open spaces looked barren to me. I liked to look out on the horizon and know where I was by the different landmarks I could see. Somehow, in Texas I always felt like I couldn’t tell where I was – it all looked the same.

Still, many years later, all of our kids wanted to come back to Texas to live as they got out on their own, so we came back too – plus my husband, although not born a Texan, is surely a Texan at heart!

I have to say that after living here for nearly four years and through driving around the state looking for property for our alpaca ranch, I’ve come to appreciate the wide open spaces that makes you feel kind of free somehow. Plus, Texas has a lot of really nice people who are friendly and mannerly, which you don’t find everywhere.

East Texas is farming and ranch country so it’s not uncommon to see high school kids dressed in John Deere tee shirts and cowboy boots. East Texas also has lots of pine trees and rolling hills, so although it’s still wide open with distant horizons, it’s still got the green I like. We’ve also found three places around Athens, Texas, that sell alpacas so we’re thinking of buying at least a couple and boarding them so we can at least feel we’re making progress toward our ranch.

Speaking of Texas macaroni and cookie cutters, I saw on AlpacaNation that they sell lots of alpaca shaped items like cookie cutters, soaps and candy molds. Since I love cooking and baking, I guess I need to order some of the cookie cutters pretty soon and start my alpaca collection.

I guess everyone feels where they live is special but there is something about life in Texas that gets into your heart.
