Life in Texas & Knitted Dishcloth Patterns
What does life in Texas have to do with knitted dishcloths? This past weekend we helped my daughter moved into a house she just purchased and when
casting around for a gift I could make for her, I thought of knitted dishcloths. (Scroll down for a list of great websites with free knitted dishcloth patterns and some books by Leisure Arts)
Real estate prices are good right now in North Texas and we are so proud of our youngest daughter for taking the big step of buying a home. She recently graduated with a degree in architecture. She’s working for an architecture firm but her ultimate goal is to buy homes that need work, fix them up and rent them out. For a young woman who is only 23, she really has her future mapped out.
My husband and I were feelingĀ pretty old this weekend, not only to see our youngest child become a homeowner, but we’re feeling our aches and pains from spending a weekend cleaning, moving and helping with yard work!
Anyway, our daughter Laura has been living the student life for over 5 years and playing softball for four of those years. She had a tiny student apartment and then moved in with us to finish her degree. From there, she moved in with a friend who had just purchased her own home. With this move to a house she owns, Laura really joins adulthood – complete with weekends taken up by mowing the lawn!
It’s been fun to see the change in her. We have three other daughters who are older, married and mothers. Laura has always trailed a little behind, mostly living in a different world than her sisters because of the age difference. Since Laura became a homeowner though, I can see the rite of passage to her becoming an equal with them. The conversation now includes where to get good prices on furniture and knick knacks for the house, which Internet provider will she use and tips on home repairs, etc.
So, on to my knitted dishcloth saga. My daughter has very little in the way of kitchen equipment so I thought she could not only use some new dishcloths but she’d appreciate the fact that I made them for her new house. I just ordered this book by Leisure Arts, Color Splash Dishcloths, which includes 15 dishcloth patterns that looked cute. Until my pattern book arrives, I’m going to try some of these free dishcloth patterns from around the net:
- Knits by Rachel has 13 of the cutest knitted dishcloth patterns – all for free! She also has some other dishcloth patterns for $2.
- Knitting Knonsense – These patterns can be dishcloths, afghan squares and more. They are divided into plants and animals, people and places and holidays and seasons.
- Knitting on the Net - offers dozens of patterns for knitted dishcloths.
- Knitting Pattern Central – also dozens of dishcloth patterns as well.
- Homespun Living on blogspot has a waffle pattern dishcloth pattern that requires less concentration to make a cute knitted dishcloth. I might try this one first since I have trouble keeping my place in complicated patterns-lol.
- Free Springtime Dishcloth Pattern from “I Live on a Farm” Perfect pattern for springtime!
- Dishcloth Pattern Corner - An entire blog dedicated to dishcloth patterns!
- Harry Potter Dishcloth Patterns by InSanity. There are four really cute Harry Potter dishcloth patterns if you’re fan of the movies or know someone who is.
One thing I love about the idea of knitting dishcloths is that I have lots of odds and ends of cotton yarn. I made some cute baby washcloths when our granddaughter was born last fall and I’ve picked up quite a few skeins of sugar n’ cream cotton yarn along the way as well. Another thing I love about knitting dishcloths is that there is something very gratifying about a small project that you can finish in an evening. I always have at least one large project like an afghan going but I like to take a break and do a baby hat or something little that I can give as a gift.
Leisure Arts has several great knitted dishcloth pattern books, including:
