Knitting – Patterns Using Just One Skein of Yarn
I just started knitting but I have piles of left over yarn scraps from my weaving days. After doing several small knitting projects, my shelves are starting to look like a yarn shop exploded. With the present economy, we can’t afford to waste anything, let alone all those left over yarns we’ve collected.

Knitting patterns using just one skein of yarn
Yesterday, I found a wonderful book at the Half Price Book Store called Special Little Knits from Just One Skein
What sold me on the book was several patterns using alpaca yarn like the one on page 15 for a Gypsy Rose Scarf which uses Suri Alpaca Lace yarn. The pattern doesn’t look too difficult so when I’m finished with some of my other projects, I’m going to try that one.
Other alpaca yarn patterns in the book is for Glitter Alpaca Scarves on page 35 – which includes 2 variations and a beaded hat and glove set on page 39.. This pattern is lacy and needs only about 250 yards of yarn. The pattern is short too. Only a 4 row pattern to repeat and you can choose the length and width you’d like.
Other patterns are grouped by the type of yarn used, whether it’s bulky weight yarns, lace weight, worsted weight or others. Then there are the knitted patterns for socks, hats, shawls, scarves and purses. Potter, a fiber artist, also includes some good basic tips and information – like what to do when your skeins run short and some specialty knitting stitches.
I’m into knitting baby blankets right now and blankets are a great way to use up your yarn stash because they come in all sizes. A baby blanket measuring 36×36 inches takes about 1,000 to 1,200 yards of yarn and by mixing and matching left over yarns, you can use up quite a bit that way too.
Update: 1/3/10 Here’s another book I just discovered for using one skein of yarn to knit purses. Thirty terrific designs for purses, bags, clutches, totes, satchels and more! Many sizes and designs, great photos.
