Knitted baby headband

Knitted baby headband

I’ve been looking for patterns for knitted baby headbands to make for the newest baby in our family. I only found one or two so I decided to try and come up with my own, which is posted here.

I have problems with gauging size and a friend on CafeMom gave me this link to Bev’s Country Cottage which has a page of measurements for head size, from preemies to babies and toddlers, up through adult men. It’s a very handy reference for figuring out the measurements for baby headband patterns too.

This knitted baby headband measures about 12″ in circumference and here is the pattern I used:

Supplies:

Sensations Rainbow Boucle – This yarn is very forgiving for mistakes!

Size 8 circular knitting needles, 11 inches

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

With Rainbow Boucle, the gauge is 4 stitches per inch so the cast on for newborn would be 48 stitches for a 12 inch circumference.

Cast On 48 stitches, place marker for beginning and begin row one by connecting your cast on into a continuous circle. Be careful not to twist the stitches.

The stitches are knitted in rib stitch: Knit 2 Purl 2 around for 5 rows, then cast off.

Weave in ends.

This headband is about one inch wide.

Embellish with flowers or bows. I made another headband with this flower made with a knifty knitter the spool tool. I found the directions for making this flower on

YouTube. It’s made with the same Sensations Boucle yarn.

One thing I do have to add about this pattern is that working with boucle on small needles can give you heartburn! However, as I mentioned, this yarn is very forgiving as to knitting mistakes.

In future posts, I’ll put up more photos of different size knitted baby headbands and I’ll experiment with other types of yarn as well. You can knit a baby headband with very little yarn so it’s a great way to use up extras from your stash. They are also very quick to make and make nice baby shower gifts.

Bev’s Cottage has a nice knitting blog, with lots of cute patterns too.
