Knitting a Baby Blanket – Easy Pattern
Since I’m new at knitting, I needed an easy pattern for my first baby blanket. This pattern uses Lion Brand Cotton-Ease and size 7 circular needles – 24 inches.

Easy Baby blanket pattern
For this baby blanket, I needed 4 balls of Cotton-Ease, which makes a 30 inch x 30 inch baby blanket. I chose yellow since we don’t know whether our daughter is having a boy or a girl yet.
Gauge 16st=4 inches in garter stitch.
Blanket Pattern
Cast on 5 stitches
Row 1: Knit across
Row 2: K3, yo, k2
Row 3: K3, yo, k3
Row 4: K3, yo, knit to the end of the row
Repeat row 4 until there are 160 stitches on the needle.
To decrease:
K2, knit 2 together, yo, k2tog, knit to the end of the row.
Repeat this until there are 5 stitches left and bind off, then weave in the ends.

This is a wonderful pattern and can be knit using soft fibers in any weight yarn from fingering to aran weight using the appropriate needle. Adding a lace edging dresses it up. Because it is knit on the diagonal (bias), it’s a great blanket for swaddling a newborn baby, providing you make it large enough and use a lighter weight yarn.

Thanks for sharing! This is such a great pattern, I love it. I have never knit on a diagonal before and did not even know you could.

Are these instructions correct? Row 2 would call for 6 stitches to have been cast on. As for the decrease, you add two and take away two, how would you ever decrease? Please help, I am a new knitter and may not understand the pattern

can i add more stitches to make the blanket bigger

thanks for your question, Mary. Yes you can keep adding stitches to make this pattern as large as you want to. I’ve used it to make afghans too. You can just stop when your pattern is as large as you want it to be or you run out of yarn!

Hi Sara, Thanks for your question. The answer is that you can begin to decrease at any point you want to. When the blanket is large enough for you, start decreasing.
