Knit Your Own Yoga Blanket – Easy Pattern
I was in yoga class a while back and several people had small yoga blankets to protect their knees during certain poses. Some of the yoga blankets were
large but some were just small enough to cushion the knees and so were easy and convenient to bring to class. I thought “It would be simple to knit a yoga blanket that’s just the right size for me.”
Yoga blankets can also be used to sit on to raise your hips during easy pose or to cushion your head or hips during reclined poses.
My knitted yoga blanket turned out to be about 24 inches by 24 inches. It was straight knitting, using 2 different yarns to give it extra cushion. One of the yarns I used was Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk in brown. I had two skeins of this in my stash and it took just a little over one skein. I am going to add fringe to the yoga blanket though for decoration so will use a little more for that.
The other yarn I used was a chunky wool blend I bought at my local yarn store and was left over from my grandson’s Christmas hat and scarf. I didn’t save the label for that but any chunky yarn in a suitable color would work. If you’d like a larger yoga blanket, just keep knitting! All I needed was this small size but if you made it bigger, you could also use it to cover your arms during meditation on cold days.
All I have to do now is add fringe before yoga class tomorrow and I can show off my new yoga blanket. This one cost me about $15. You can purchase yoga blankets for about $30 but I like the idea of having one I made myself. Knitting the yoga blanket was kind of a meditative experience in itself since it was simple knitting in a square with no patterns to remember.

Knit your own yoga blanket
I started taking a yoga class nearly a year ago at my local YMCA and before that, I practiced on my own using DVD’s at home. Yoga and knitting have a lot in common as they are both meditative experiences that sooth the nerves. It’s surprising how yoga works the muscles and I feel lots more flexible than I used to, that’s for sure!
