Joan’s Travels – Off to the West Coast
Another break from blogging about knitting and alpacas, this time to visit family on the West Coast. Every May, I go to Oregon to visit my parents and this time my hubby and 2 dogs came with me. My daughter also lives in Santa Cruz so we are spending the holiday weekend with her and her husband.
Driving across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona is an experience. We’ve done it several times now and there isn’t much to see along the way. At least it was cool and not over 100 degrees as it can sometimes be. We had several good books on my Ipod that kept us busy on the drive.

This is the daughter I’m knitting the baby blanket for, so I’m trying to finish it this weekend so I can leave it with her. She still doesn’t know the sex of the baby so I went with yellow. Only a few rows to go!
Yesterday, we went up into the mountains to Boulder Creek, CA, where they were having a music and art festival. Lots of vendor booths. I got some organic soap, which smelled great. I was a little disappointed that many of the booths seemed be dominated by imported products, rather than homemade, handmade items. One reason I bought the soap was because it was handmade by the guy who had the booth. I would have thought a festival in California, which seems so organic and “hippiefied” in almost all ways, would shun oriental imports at a craft fair.

I did see some beautiful bead work though. One woman had some $500 bracelets that I loved. Guess I should have continued selling my bead work! I used to sell necklaces and earrings when we lived in San Diego and I got very good prices for my handiwork, but once we moved to Texas, things were selling so cheaply there that it wasn’t worth the time I put into it.
Found out I can watch Young and the Restless on the Internet! I’d never tried before as I usually DVR it every day and watch it while I get my husband’s breakfast and lunch together in the morning. My mom in Oregon watches it, though, (she’s the one who got me hooked) so I can also catch up there.
Needless to say, I won’t be blogging regularly the next couple of weeks but I hope to find some great yarn shops to report on later.

Thank you for a wonderful article Joan! I agree that I would think a craft show/fair would stick to handmade and push it more than imports. It sort of takes away from the gist of the show itself.
