In the style section of our Fort Worth Star Telegram this morning, there was a terrific article on felted purses and how to make them. The article was about Holly Craft and

the felted bag design she shared in the December issue of  Crafts ‘n Things. I’ve been interested in felting for a while and have been collecting patterns and projects to do now that Christmas knitting is done. The felted bags Holly makes are made from old wool sweaters. If you don’t have an old wool sweater to felt, you could take a trip to the local Goodwill and find a pretty one for a couple dollars. What makes these felted bags so terrific is not only that they are cute and fashionable, but you can recycle too!

Visit The Spotted Canary.com to find the instructions for Holly’s felted bag under Rags to Riches Sweater Bag. Spotted Canary.com is a great craft site with a forum. You have to register to see the felted bag pattern but registration is free. There are other great felted patterns on the site as well. There is quite a bit of felting information on this website so it’s worth a look.

Read more about Holly’s creations on her blog, Today’s Creations.

Along with making a felted purse from an old sweater with Holly’s instructions, I’ve also ordered a couple books on felting that got good reviews on Amazon.com. The first is Uniquely Felt by Christine White, which got lots of 5 star reviews on Amazon.com and Felted Bags by Alice Underwood, a book with 30 felted bag designs. Felted bags hasn’t been released yet, but it looks like a good book.

If you’re interested in making purses, here’s another interesting little book I found about bags to knit from one skein of yarn called One Ball Knits Purses, offering 20 purse and bag patterns and designs.

I can see it now, I really need to get away from the computer and jump into my crafts! I have two knitting projects on the needles right now, a baby blanket for a new granddaughter and a scarf for myself (finally I’m knitting something for me!)

I can already see the possibilities for these felted bags and purse designs, however, as birthday gifts and Christmas gifts for the coming year.
